El Questro and the Gibb River Road – Awesome!

What a fantastic day today with spectacular scenery and drives at El Questro.

There was not much open along the Gibb River Road but we were able to explore as much as we could of the El Questro Wilderness Park. The only problem was that many of the walks were 1 hour plus (one way), so you would need a lot of time (a day is not enough). The smaller feet of our kids restrict you too.

First up was Zebedee Springs which was one of the best waterholes we have swum in (or I should say bathed in as they are small). It was a tropical hidden oasis with lush livistona and pandanus palms and the water was so warm and clear. Sorry to the other people there by disturbing your peace and quiet with our excited kids.

There were a few water crossings in this Park which the kids enjoyed and in particular they liked the steep climb (in low range 4WD) up Saddleback Ridge for a spectacular 360 degree view of the surrounding escarpments. Yes, Darren enjoyed it to too & had been waiting for an opportunity to 4WD. The kids were on the edge of their seat whilst Michelle tried to read her book again. I made it hard for her with the bumps.

Nice drop off going down!

We then went to Jackaroo’s Waterhole which was a great spot to watch the fish, in particular catfish. There was also an impressive Boab tree – what a trunk!

At Emma Gorge there was a nice resort where we had a sit down lunch in their open air restaurant. We then set off for the walk along the Gorge, but with time pressing on before sunset, we did not get to the end. It was still awesome just the same and the kids did really well with the rock climbing and river crossings. So did you Michelle!

What a great day! You just need time and be prepared to walk a lot if you want to see more gorges.
