Spectacular Bungle Bungle Flight

Today was Michelle’s turn to take to the skies for an unforgettable trip to the Bungle Bungle massif by Slingair Airlines (owned by Curry Kenny Aviation – yes the ironman).

The somewhat turbulent flight (she came back a little seedy) took in magnificent views of the Ord Dam and the full expanse of Lake Argyle (40 times of Sydney Harbour if filled to capacity). The earth Dam Wall is 335m long and 98.5m high and was completed in 1972 at a cost of $22M. At the base of the wall is a hydro power station which supplies power to the Argyle Diamond Mine, Kununurra and Wyndham.

After flying over some massive cattle stations it was then on to Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle ranges. The 360 million years old range of sandstone has distinctive orange and black stripes across the beehive-like mounds, encased in a skin of silica and algae. Very impressive!

Before heading back to the Kununurra airport, it was a return flight via the Argyle Diamond Mine. This mine in the world’s largest supplier of diamonds, producing approximately 30 million carats each year. Unfortunately the pilot did not fly low enough for Michelle to quickly grab a very rare pink diamond. It was an awesome 2 hour flight on a little Cessna (2 pilots and 3 passengers).
