We are back in a big city. You can quickly tell as Geraldton
has 2 McDonalds and a Target (not just a country Target), so we had to stock up
at the sales with some winter clothes. Although, the weather here is really
nice at 21 degrees with not a cloud in the sky. It is getting cooler as we head
south (approximately 450km north of Perth).
After setting up at our nice caravan park only 2km from
town, we explored what the city has to offer and were quite impressed with the
cities layout and facilities. It would be just like a Geelong on the coast
although a lot warmer and a much nicer shopping precinct & water front. The
property values are much cheaper for an ocean view.
First up we checked out the Point Moore Lighthouse which is
the only steel structure of its kind in Australia and the largest at 34m. This
lighthouse was built in 1878 and the light can be seen 26km out to sea.
We were very moved visiting the HMAS Sydney II War memorial,
which is a wonderful tribute to the 645 men who lost their lives in November
1941. It was not until 2008 that the ship was found 120 nautical miles from
Steep Point (almost 3km below surface). The dome shown in the photos includes
645 birds representing each person who lost their life.

The old Geraldton Gaol was built in 1858 and was operational
until 1986, making it the 2nd longest serving prison in Australia
behind Fremantle Gaol. Each prison cell is now used as a market stall.

Now that's a stretch! |
The recently renovated foreshore precinct offers one of the
best playgrounds that we have seen in our travels (& even back home).
Whilst the kids were totally enjoying their play, I grabbed a nice latte &
hot chocolate for Michelle & I. It was a great way to spend some time.
