Monkey Mia

With an early start we headed north to Monkey Mia to see the dolphins. We were expecting to see many dolphins, however apparently they have only 5 on their feeding program. The calves stayed back from the beach to play. This can be a very popular tourist attraction at times with up to 800 people all vying for a view, but we were lucky with a small crowd of about 50. Only a few are selected to feed the dolphins and Amy was ecstatic to be selected for the second feeding session. One small fish and it was all over for Amy’s feed (& you can’t touch them).

We thought what better way to see more dolphins, sharks and the elusive dugong was a 2 ½ hour catamaran tour on board the Aristocat 2. It was a bit cool for boom netting but our first stop was Blue Lagoon Pearls (a floating pearl farm). If anyone is game enough to say they watched ‘Farmer wants a Wife’ they may remember Jamie who owns it with his brother Robert Morgan (started by their Dad). Jamie was not working the day we were there, but we saw many photos. This small scale farm is unique in that it places small gold nuggets and opals inside the oysters for a unique pearl at the end of the process. We did not get to see any dugongs from the catamaran, however were very lucky to see a dolphin with a sea sponge on its nose that it uses to prevent stings from lion fish and other nasty marine life (whilst foraging through the seagrass). It was a very enjoyable cruise.

We finished our day with a soak in a 38 degree hot tub at the Peron Homestead.
